Funebrarum (us)
Funebrarum (New Jersey, US, oldschool death metal, ex- evoken, assück, goreaphobia, incantation)
"...This is assured to darken all skies to gray if not the blackest of nights. Funebrarum captures and maintains the grim aesthetics of earlier death metal, where brutality was delivered through simple punishment and a sincere, squirming hatred. This should appease any fan of the retro wave of death metal, and it's combination of influences and crushing production should score them some recognition beyond that niche. One of the best new US bands I've heard lately in the vein of rootsdeath metal which is proud to wear the name, far superior to the noodly spastic tech shit so many bands are phoning in to impress their girlfriends and combat their attention deficit disorders" -Autothrall, From the Dust Returned blog (usa), April 2009
FUNEBRARUM (us) - Cyklone Empire (http://www.cyclone-empire.com/)
- Featuring current and ex-members of Disma, Evoken, Goreaphobia, Incantation, Assuck, Citizens Arrest.
Funebrarum was formed by guitarist Nick Orlando (Evoken) and vocalist Daryl Kahan (Abazagorath) in April of 1999, with the intention of creating dark and morbid death metal. With fellow Abazagorath and Evoken member Dario Derna filling in on drums, the band recorded their debut demo "Triumphant Ascent" later that same year. Though the sound quality of the recording was extremely raw, the material was well received by the underground metal hordes. The early core line-up was solidified with the additions of Abazagorath bassist David Wagner and drummer Brian Jimenez.
In October 2000, the four-piece would record their second demo entitled "Tombs of Sleeping Darkness", after which Jimenez would part ways with the band. In July 2002, a remastered version of the demo on CD under the title "Beneath the Columns of Abandoned Gods" would be released on Necroharmonic Productions. The release would receive international praise, with Unrestrained Magazine hailing Funebrarum as the "cure old-school death metal fans have been anticipating." The band did perform several devastating live shows during this period with bands like Mortician, Mayhem and Hate Eternal etc..
From the end of the "Tombs of Sleeping Darkness" sessions, the lack of a drummer slowed things down a bit but Daryl, Dave and Nick continue to work on new material.
2003: With the help of session drummer Justin DeTore, the band re-recorded two early tracks for their next official release, the 7" EP "Dormant Hallucination," which was released by Midnight 666 Records. Again Funebrarum received glowing praise. Metal Side Magazine called the band the "masters of old school death metal". The following year "Beneath the Columns of Abandoned Gods" would be reissued by Necroharmonic Records.
2005: A new era for Funebrarum began with the additions of drummer Shawn Eldridge and Matt Medeiros on second guitar. Now more powerful than ever, this incarnation of Funebrarum began forging an even more potent version of their trademark pestilential death metal.
2006: Funebrarum releases a split CD with Sweden's Interment entitled "Conjuration of the Sepulchral" on Conqueror of Thorns Records.
2007: The band enters Don Fury Studio in Coney Island, New York to record eight new songs for their second album "The Sleep of Morbid Dreams".
2008: Funebrarum signs a two album deal with the German record label, Cyclone Empire.
2009: The Sleep of Morbid Dreams" is released in April 2009 to a tidal wave of positive press and great reviews. The band was mobilizing to tour Europe with Interment during this time but due to personal matters Nick Orlando had to move to another state with his family. Thus ending a chapter in the history of Funebrarum. During this period the band performed several exclusive live shows (as a four-piece) with luminaries and friends such as Demilich and Dead Infection.
2011: Funebrarum is back and stronger than ever with a solid new line-up including guitarist Alex Bouks of Goreaphobia and Incantation fame. Following two successful live performances at Maryland Deathfest and Kill-Town Death Fest in Denmark the band are already working on material for a new 7" ep and their third album which will be released on Cyclone Empire.
